Liturgy

Choir Group
We have two choirs in our parish. There is the parish choir who sing at most Masses. Then, there is the Men’s Choir who sing at the 8:30am first Sunday Mass and on the Third Sunday Saturday evening Mass. If you have an ability to sing or play a musical instrument then we encourage you to speak with our musical director.

Children’s Liturgy of The Word
Each Sunday at the 8:30am Mass our parish priest invites our children to leave the church and attend the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This liturgy of the Word is coordinated by a Team Leader. The class content depends on the teachers and the Sunday liturgical readings. This is an exciting, valued and important group. If you have teaching experience and are interested in Children’s liturgy then contact our Children’s’ Liturgy Coordinator on 38214902. Anyone involved in this ministry is required to have a Blue Card.

Funeral Liturgy Coordinator
Star of the Sea parish has the service of a funeral liturgy coordinator.  The coordinator has extensive experience as a grief and loss counsellor. In this ministry, the coordinator liaises with the grieving family and friends, the funeral directors, the data projectionist, the musician and the parish priest.  The funeral coordinator does ensure the funeral service is fully prepared and conducted with great dignity and respect according to the family’s expectations.

Liturgy Group
This small group of parishioners who meet with parish priest each month to pray together and then to prepare the liturgy for the coming Masses of the month.  This group is busy as it includes the selection of music and special requirements of various feasts.  If you have experience in liturgy preparation and would be able to contribute to the liturgical planning of the parish please speak with the parish priest.

Liturgy of The Word Coordinators
The concept of lay led worship evokes a range of reactions in people, from those who want to use it at every opportunity to others who fear it as alien to traditional Catholic practice. Some may even view it as “breaking Church law” or as ‘lay people taking over’.  The fact that liturgy in the absence of a priest is a reality and a necessity in many parts of the world has been acknowledged by the Vatican.  If a parish’s assessment of its liturgical/pastoral needs indicates that lay people will be required to lead liturgy during the week, or on Sundays, or for funerals, there needs to be a prayerful discernment of those who would best lead the community’s worship in the absence of a priest or deacon.  Care is required to ensure that the ministry does not become one person’s exclusive domain.  On the other hand, parishes do not need a large number of people for this ministry.

The qualities needed by lay leaders of liturgy include an understanding of leadership as service, a sense of both private and communal prayer, the ability to communicate with clergy and parishioners alike, and a pastoral sensitivity to the needs of others. Lay leaders require skills in presiding at public worship and in public speaking.  They need to have a sound knowledge of the rites, structures and symbols of liturgy and a sound theological, scriptural and ecclesial background.

Mass Coordinators
These people take responsibility to co ordinate each of our weekend masses.
The tasks include: Open the church, Prepare for the Mass, Prepare the PA system. Ensure the rostered liturgical readers and Minister of Eucharist  in liturgical ministry are present and prepared. Ensure the presiding priest has everything prepared for him.

Parishioners, who have served as Eucharistic Ministers in liturgical ministry eventually move into being Mass Coordinators.  For more information phone parish office 38214902.

Ministers Of Eucharist
In all our parish churches, we have people who are trained and serve the community as Ministers of The Eucharist.  These Eucharistic Ministers distribute Holy Communion at Mass and on occasion bring Communion to the sick and housebound.
This ministry is open to all practicing Catholics over the age of 18 who undergo a short period of preparation in the Parish and are formally commissioned to serve in this ministry by the parish priest.
These are usually approved by the Parish priest and are formally trained for the ministry.

Ministers of Eucharist Coordinator
The Coordinator tasks include:
  • Recruitment and training of new ministers of Eucharist
  • Prepare the rosters (6 week in advance)
  • Provide ongoing support and development
  • Problem solves issues that may occur.

Ministry of Readers
Proclaiming the Word of God is an important ministry in the church and volunteers are needed to read at the Sunday Masses.  The coordinator for this group is Mary Fehlberg and she can be contacted through the parish office.

Pastoral Ministry to Nursing Homes Residents
We have a team of pastoral ministers who regularly visit the sick in nursing homes in the parish.  Father Frank O’Dea celebrates Mass in the various nursing homes once a month. The pastoral ministers perform lay led liturgies, pray with the residents, organise for the sick to receive anointing and distribute Eucharist.  If you would like to be involved in this ministry phone 3821 4901.

Pastoral Minister
Our pastoral minister cares for the sick and aged.  She does pastoral visitation and visits the sick parishioners in hospital. She also coordinates parishioners who need assistance with transport to weekend Masses.  The pastoral minister may be contacted through the parish office 3821 4902/0402 432 793.
